Places To Go In The Future In Lauderdale-By-The-Sea …

November 2, 2009 by Barbara

“Lauderdale-by-the-Sea plans underwater marine park

Clean water advocacy groups are moving forward on two fronts to preserve Broward’s offshore reefs and coastal waters, including an underwater marine park in the early planning stages.

The Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Town Commission has voted to establish a marine park for the coral reef off the coast from Anglin’s Pier at Commercial Boulevard south to Palm Avenue.

The underwater park, modeled on Key West’s Marine Park, would exclude boats from certain areas to prevent anchors from damaging sensitive reefs and extend areas for swimmers, divers and snorkelers.

The town plans to obtain the required government permits, as well as state and federal grants for the project. It will discuss the issue in upcoming Town Commission meetings in November.

In a parallel move, a group called Cry of the Water is asking the state Department of Environmental Protection to designate the coral reef offshore Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea as Oustanding Florida Waters.

The designation would help preserve water quality and maintain the marine life and recreational and fishing industries in the area, said Dan Clark, president of Cry of the Water.

The reef is among the closest to shore in the continental United States within swimming distance from the beach, and the outstanding waters designation would help protect it from urban runoff and pollution discharges.

The application is in the developmental stage, Clark said. Cry of the Water plans to solicit public input, hold workshops and form a group to draft a management plan for the reef.”
