Update on Scenic Highway Celebration: Decision was made to use the Bonnet House instead of the Hillsboro Club due to financial considerations, and a conflict on dates. We will look into using the Lighthouse in the future for events.
Beth Kuttner, Gladys Leeks, John Rude, and Dave Baber of the Broward County Historical Commission, our Bonnet House contact, toured the Bonnet House. Beth told about the tour of the Bonnet House. The site is perfect for the celebration, central location, weather will not be a problem; it is easy to get to. Parking is free, has a shuttle, because of the positives, they made a decision to go with Bonnet House for the celebration. The committee agreed.
Thanks to all who came up with sites for the celebration.
The time of the celebration will now be 4:30 p.m. Time of the ribbon cutting has changed to 5:30 p.m. due to daylight savings time; sunset is at 5:35 p.m. so the ceremony will be at twilight.
Attire is business casual. Comfortable shoes, no high heels due to terrain.
Security and traffic control were discussed; do we want to stay by the house, or go over to A1A, for the celebration. It was decided to keep the ribbon cutting at the Bonnet House with a background of A1A; going to A1A would be too complicated.
Discussion on the invitation came up with wording changes and suggestions; Bett will make changes and send a draft around.
Chamber heads and city officials will be invited and asked to bring their scissors to participate in the ribbon cutting.
Invitation List: Open to the public, dignitaries from State to City level will receive invitations. The number of people attending will not be a problem, we would love a crowd. MPO, TCC, and CIR members will be invited and the Visitors Convention Bureau head as well as historical societies, visitor and tourism people at the city level.
A question was asked, “Who gets to cut the ribbon? If the governor attends he will cut the ribbon, all can sign the ribbon with a marker during the time before the cutting, more than one can participate.
After responses start to come in we will decide about giving awards/certificates.
Invitations will be done by email except for the governor and state and federal elected officials. We can email also, as many crossover invitations as possible. Lahoma Scarlett will do press releases.
Short speeches, one perhaps, about how the committee got started in December 1999.
Refreshments, Beth: Bonnet gave ideas, go to Publix for trays of food, Whole Foods, no liquor, because of security and insurance considerations, stores may donate soda. Must go through corporate in Publix. Check with Winn Dixie, Costco, cake and platters, Costco carrot cake. Beth and Jimmy have tea lights. Do we need table cloths, we should ask if they have square or round tables?
Marti McGeary suggested that we change the RSVP date to October. 30, so we have time to reinvite, and we will get a better idea of numbers. Public is invited.
Add Bonnet House website to invitation.
How to raise money, Steven Wolf and John Rude will go to the various city chambers for donations of about $200.
Cherie Lynn Gibson, and Marti McGeary will head the food committee.
Get Art Seitz to take pictures.
Do something unique as entertainment.
Marti and Bett will ask Marcus Howell, a student in Deerfield Beach who plays saxophone, if he will agree to play in the beginning of the Celebration, until speakers start, and perhaps at the end.
Checks are to be made out to Broward Urban River Trails, 501(C)3.
Jimmy Crimminger will be the greeter. Let Gladys know if anyone needs handicapped facilities, and Jimmy will direct the cars to the front to unload.
Meeting adjourned at 12:28 p.m.
