A1A Scenic Highway … Planning Ahead …Places To Go … Dates To Remember ….

September 9, 2009 by Barbara

MINUTES OF THE STATE ROAD A1A SCENIC HIGHWAY CORRIDOR ADVOCACY GROUP
Wednesday, August 19, 2009
11:00 A.M.
Broward County Governmental Center
115 South Andrews Avenue, Rm 329F
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301

Called to order at 11:15 by John Rude who thanked the FDOT District 4 for the Van Tour.
See sign in sheet for attendees.
Beatriz Caicedo said that FDOT donates the signs, approximately 30, the placement has to be coordinated, and it is ongoing. Mr. Rude reviewed how we will place the signs, e.g. before bridges far enough out for better visibility.
Art Seitz mentioned that sidewalks should be kept clear of signs, and suggested that if a spot could be found, a Scenic Highway mural would be a good idea.
Sign codes were discussed, State road codes supersede city codes. Sign pollution is to be avoided.
Ms. Caicedo will invite someone from FDOT Traffic Operations to a future meeting for signs.
Beth Kuttner will check about grants for other signage to point the way to destinations.
Celebration sites were discussed, Bonnet House, IT Parker Facility in Dania Beach, the North Pavilion in Deerfield Beach and the Hillsboro Club on Hillsboro Mile by the Lighthouse.
The committee agreed to go with the Hillsboro Club as a first choice, Bonnet House second, then Deerfield Beach and Dania Beach.
Formal invitations will be sent out for the Celebration event on Wednesday, November 18, we will ask for RSVPs as a gauge to how many will attend.
Jessie Guido and Steve Wolf will work on the accommodations with the Hillsboro Club, and get approvals during next week.
Bett Willett will draft an invitation, RSVP one week prior to the celebration.
Next meeting we will plan the event, and discuss the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Ms. Willett agreed to be assistant secretary and Marti McGeary to be 2nd assistant.
After the celebration, the committee will work on addressing comments from the SHAC review of the Corridor Management Plan Update for June 2010.
Yearly anniversaries should be celebrated, as a yearly update is due to the State, the celebration could coincide with that.
JoAnn Medalie, the Centennial Committee for Fort Lauderdale 2011 will focus on the beach and A1A, the anniversary will fit right in.
The A1A Scenic Highway designation committee was started in December, 1999 by Phil Matson with Gary Sieger and Irwin Oster, for the ribbon cutting we should have more about this.
Meeting adjourned at 12:25 p.m.

Submitted: Bett Willett
