NEW FANGLED TOWN HALL MEETING ….

August 26, 2009 by Barbara

BC- What a way to spend an hour and well worth it if you’re called…. Answer the phone people…

‘Klein holding town hall hearing on health care
> Posted by Anthony Man on August 26, 2009 08:53 PM

Though he’s part of the Democratic congressional majority, which has made health care overhaul a priority, U.S. Rep. Ron Klein told a group of constituents Wednesday night that he won’t promise to vote in favor of whatever legislation emerges.

Klein, who represents Broward and Palm Beach counties, said he wants to see changes in the legislation.

“Until I’m satisfied I’m not going to be supporting this bill. I’m not quite there yet,” he said in response to a question from Bill in Lighthouse Point.

Bill is among more than 300 people who got in touch with Klein’s office to participate in Klein’s telephone town hall. The call began shortly after 8 p.m.; it’s continuing now.

The caller said he was concerned with the potential cost of the health care plan and the government’s poor track record running entities such as the Postal Service.

“Right now we’re just taxed to death,” he said.

Klein said he wants to see more cost control before he’d support health care legislation.

Other callers wanted to know about benefits to undocumented immigrants (Klein said they wouldn’t get any) and abortion funding (which Klein said wouldn’t be covered).

Another caller was “worried about the people who are advising our president. He’s surrounded himself by people who are confirmed Marxists and socialists.”

Klein said he supports the free market, but said the insurance industry’s exemption from antitrust laws means there isn’t effective competition.

“As far as the socialism, Marxism. I’m not a socialist, you’re not a socialist,” he said.

I wont vote for him but the telephone town was actually really productive and seemed a lot better then the screaming and yelling or the totally packed with Dem Wexler event. There was a lot of people calling Klein names on here the past few days but at least he took real questions from real people and not just from one side of the aisle. Even the West guy running against him had a totally packed audience of republicans (which i usually agree with). but for West to call Klein cowardice is ridiculous. Would west rather have Klein do an event like he did with all Dems. Give me a break. At least tonight people from both sides were heard

I was surprised to receive the call to join in, but pleasantly so. There were a number of questions from both factions, and Congressman Klein did not shy away. If the audience tonight is any indication of where the public stands…it’s not now…not yet and with a whole lot more explanations!

WALKING TO SERVE A PURPOSE ….

August 24, 2009 by Barbara

What happens when you need a
Friend and there’s no one there?

Having no one to turn to in a moment of need is a
trying experience for anyone, but especially for the
poor. Are you willing to be a friend of the poor?

For nearly two centuries, the poor and needy of the world have found a friend in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. This year, on September 26th, the Society will hold its second annual nationwide Friends of the Poor 5K Walk. We invite you to participate and become Friends of the Poor, too. Pledges made on behalf of registered walkers in a given community will benefit those most in need in that same community.

To register as a walker, to pledge support for a walker, volunteer, or for more information, go to www.svdpfriendsofthepoorwalk.org. To volunteer, use the local contact information below.

Please join us. Walk a mile in someone else’s shoes and find out how good it feels to give.

EXTRA …. EXTRA …. HYPERLOCAL WEB NEWS ….

August 19, 2009 by Barbara

full text…full text link below…
“A journalism think tank announced grants Monday to help five news organizations, including The Miami Herald, work with community groups on new cooperative approaches to gathering and presenting neighborhood news on the Internet.
American University’s J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism, based in Washington, is funding the one-year project with a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The money will be used to support a liaison at each news organization and provide small stipends to local content partners.
“We think this network is an important new way of expanding community news coverage at a time when it’s hard to launch fresh initiatives,” said Miami Herald Executive Editor Anders Gyllenhaal. “We very much look forward to being a part of this national experiment and trying to figure out new ways of providing community news.”
For its part, The Miami Herald is reaching out to community organizations, existing community newspapers and journalists interested in creating local reporting groups to publish geographically distinct websites on the same platform.
The goal is to develop a network of channels on the Web that provide community news from across South Florida, where users can find news, information, conversation, commentary and advertising from bloggers, school groups and news organizations large and small.
In addition to The Miami Herald, the other news organizations taking part in the pilot project are: The Seattle Times, The Charlotte Observer, Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times and Tucsoncitizen.com, a newspaper that became a Web-only news outlet in May.
“We hope this project will help traditional news organizations and new media makers begin to figure out how to amplify good content coming from their communities — sharing it, even monetizing it for all participants,” said Jan Schaffer, executive director of J-Lab. J-Lab is a center at American University’s School of Communication.
J-Lab will assemble ideas and lessons learned into an overall report on how such networked journalism collaborations might work.
Those with a hyperlocal website or community newspaper or those involved with a local neighborhood group interested in taking part in the pilot project through The Miami Herald should contact Elissa Vanaver, vice president/Community Affairs, at 305-376-3628 or e-mail evanaver@MiamiHerald.com.”
