SHRED YOUR IDENTITY THEFT WORRIES AWAY

Don’t leave a shred of your personal documents at the fingertips of criminals…Shred them away!

Following a very successful year of Shred-A-Thons in 2008, where more than 49,000 pounds of documents were shredded, the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the Office of the Florida Attorney General are committed to continue helping residents fight identity theft by inviting them to shred their old documents.

There’s a Shred-A-Thon scheduled at a city near you:
Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon

June 27: BSO District Office, 5399 North Dixie Hwy., Oakland Park

July 25: Pompano Beach City Hall 100 West Atlantic Blvd. Pompano Beach

Aug. 29: Dania Beach City Hall 100 West Dania Beach Blvd. Dania Beach

Sept. 12: BSO Weston District Office 17300 Royal Palm Blvd. Weston

The Shred-A-thon events began in Broward County in May 2008 as a joint initiative by Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti and the Office of the Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, with the assistance of UNISHRED and The National Association of TRIADS.

The Shred-A-thon provides residents with a safe way to dispose of their personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other material that might contain sensitive data.

The service is free of charge. There is a limit of five boxes of documents per person.

For more information, please contact 954-321-4100.

Separated At Birth?…

June 22, 2009 by Barbara

Excerpts…

A “Timetree of Life” website unveiled this week by biologists Blair Hedges of Penn State University and Sudhir Kumar of Arizona State University counts the genes separating species to reveal the age when their ancestry diverged in a simple comparison application available for everyone’s use.

“The ultimate goal of the Timetree of Life initiative is to chart the timescale of life — to discover when each species and all their ancestors originated, all the way back to the origin of life some four billion years ago,” Hedges said, in a statement. “Timetrees are having broad impact in biology and in other fields such as geology, and even in human health, where researchers need to track the evolution and spread of disease-causing organisms.”‘

BC…One more seat taken on the bench….of “benched” Town Managers….NEXT!…

Excerpts…

‘NORTH LAUDERDALE – One month after a city commissioner tried to get City Manager Richard Sala fired, his tenure has come to an end.

City commissioners voted 3-1 at a hastily called meeting Saturday morning to approve a separation agreement with Sala. He will receive six months’ salary, plus an $8,400 payment for outplacement services.

City manager since 2004, Sala earned $163,517 a year. He was cleaning out his desk and unavailable for comment today.

Assistant City Manager Ambreen Bhatty becomes the interim manager.

Vice Mayor John Cangemi voted for Sala’s ouster. “It was time for him to go,” he said. “His visionary goals and my visionary goals were different.”

Some of the commissioners were pushed by the city’s fire union, which has strong influence over voters come election time.

“He made it hard for us to talk to him,” Sargent said. “It was a negative work environment. Usually the fire chief runs the department–it was the city manager who did.”

Commissioner Rich Moyle was the only “no” vote.

“He was a great city manager for the city, and he was an all-around great guy,” Moyle said today.

Commissioner Gary Frankel, the Sala opponent who had lobbied his colleagues for the firing a month ago, was out of town and didn’t attend Saturday’s meeting.

Today he applauded a “wise decision of my fellow commissioners. … It gives us the ability to move on.”

Excerpts…

‘Coast Guard expects to allow 4th of July fireworks shows on the water
The U.S. Coast Guard said today it intends to grant permits to four cities seeking to launch fireworks from ocean barges on the holiday.

The U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday it intends to issue permits by June 26 to four cities seeking to launch fireworks from ocean barges after environmental protection rules are finalized.

The Coast Guard has applications from Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Pompano Beach, and could have revoked a permit already issued for Delray Beach.

“The merchants that stay open July 4th tell us it’s their biggest day of the year,” Ferrer said. “The hotels are full and the businesses rely on it, even more in this economy. You’ve got 100,000 people walking past stores twice. It’s great for family reunions and is a total community event.”‘

Sweeping Yourself Out Of A Job…

June 16, 2009 by Barbara

BC- Was there a memo to Town Administrations in the USA…Clean Sweeps…of Code Violations fill the Town Coffers?…OUCH!…

Excerpts…

‘TOLEDO, Ohio – Although not outlined in the  city charter, a city memo has allowed workers with the city of Toledo’s Division of Streets, Bridges and Harbor  to issue parking citations to citizens.

It was learned over the weekend that Susan Frederick, acting commissioner with streets, bridges and harbor, fined several motorists for parking in their driveways on Holland-Sylvania near Dorr Street.

Residents’ vehicles were parked on a turn-around portion of their driveway in front of their property, something they need to safely get out of their drive on Holland-Sylvania, which, at times, can be busy.

Megan Robson, spokesperson for Mayor Carty Finkbeiner, released a statement to the media Monday evening.

“The Commissioner of Streets, Bridges and Harbor responded by going to the location of the complaint to assess whether it was valid or not,” Robson said in the statement. “She personally observed that it was a valid complaint. She observed several illegally parked vehicles along the first street she visited.”

“While there, a neighbor asked her to check out his street, which also had a number of illegally parked vehicles. Once she observed they too were illegally parked, she cited them as well. The City of Toledo supports its laws in general and illegally parked vehicles can and will be ticketed, and these tickets are considered valid.”

The city fined residents $25.

Mayor Finkbeiner said residents who were ticketed in fact broke the law for parking on a part of a drive that was not paved. He stood by Frederick, who wrote the violations.

“Every law in the city should be enforced and I will defer to the director over the media, that’s for dag-gone sure,” Mayor Finkbeiner said Monday during a news conference for the city’s latest model block project. “I will not second guess her because more times than not she’s right and the citizens that are criticizing her are not right.”

“He made the statement that more times than not we are the ones that are wrong,” said Shelly Cousino, who also received a parking violation ticket. “What we were wrong in doing is electing him again.”

Councilman Collins met with residents and collected the tickets. He assured the problem would be resolved. He said Tuesday that the tickets were an abuse of power.

“If we have time for this Mickey Mouse nonsense something is radically wrong with that,” Councilman Collins said.’
