After months of investigation, the multi-agency operation “Toy Soldiers” ends its first phase with the round up of over 50 known gang members.
Since August 2007, the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Federal Bureau of Investigation have conducted an ongoing operation dubbed “Toy Soldiers” focused on ridding the streets of Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach of the violent gang activity that has developed in recent years.
As opposed to the monthly and quarterly gang sweeps conducted by BSO and the Multi-Agency Gang Task Force, “Toy Soldiers” is focused on identifying and gathering in-depth intelligence on key gang members to dismantle the operations from the top.
The ongoing investigation revealed the increase in violence in the area was due in part to a turf war between members of a gang called “Doom City,” its associates and other local gangs, over territories used for drug sales.
Since Wednesday (4/29/09), investigators armed with warrants have been rounding up suspects. “Toy Soldiers” identified these men as being involved in narcotic related crimes, shootings and suspected in homicides, and are taking them to the BSO version of a toy box: the BSO Main Jail.
In March Sheriff Al Lamberti was named Chairman of the Region 7 Gang Reduction Task Force by Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, and he is committed to bringing criminal gang members to justice for their crimes.
