Through The Looking Glass…

April 14, 2009 by Barbara

Alice is having a Tea party….

Not your cup of tea?……perhaps you want something more rowdy?…To make a statement!…

‘April 15th from 5 PM till 8 PM a Tax Day Tea Party will be held in Downtown Fort Lauderdale in front of the Federal Building at 299 East Broward Blvd.  The Tax Day Tea Party is a peaceful protest calling for the lowering of taxes and the cutting of pork.

This will be a great opportunity to photograph a protest in a photojournalist way. I recommend everyone get there at or shortly before five to get a good feel for the area. There is also plenty of parking behind the Federal Building in parking garages.  This event is supposed to last till eight, but we will photograph until the event ends or the sun goes down.

After this event we’ll be meeting at Peter Pan Diner for dinner and good conversation. Peter Pan Diner is located only a few miles north of the protest location on Oakland Park Blvd and West Dixie Hwy.

BC- Who knew…Bankers Banking On “Bonus Boutiques”….

Excerpt…

‘President Barack Obama’s new proposals on banker pay were a striking reminder of just how the balance of power is changing on Wall Street — away from the big banks reliant on federal aid and to foreign-based or boutique firms that haven’t required any bailout money.

Wednesday, investment bankers across the industry were calling this week the most devastating to hit their industry since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in September’

Excerpt…

‘the Concerned Citizens of Coconut Creek. She considers herself a watchdog, often making public records requests under Florida’s broad Sunshine Laws.

As traditional media outlets struggle and shrink, it’s encouraging to know people like Petitt are out there to pick up the slack.

“It’s going to fall more on people like me to do the digging and keep tabs on public officials,” Petitt said.

But government won’t make it easy for them.

Petitt learned that recently, when she requested two years’ worth of e-mail from City Manager David Rivera and logs of the city’s credit card spending.

When the city clerk notified Petitt that her information was available, she was told she’d have to pay $170, including $124 in labor costs.

Petitt balked, but paid’

How To Live On $100 A Day….

April 10, 2009 by Barbara

BC-$100 Slurpee “habit”……

‘POMPANO BEACH – Three more 7-Eleven convenience stores were robbed in Broward County this morning, and the suspect responsible for two of them matches the description of a man who may have struck the stores five times in Fort Lauderdale since last year, authorities say.

This morning’s robberies — including two in Pompano Beach — are the latest in a spate of heists in Broward and Palm Beach County targeting the 24-hour convenience store chain. Each robbery lasts under a minute or two. Officials are sharing notes to determine whether it’s the same robber.’

Ain’t It Grand….

April 9, 2009 by Barbara

BC- Worth the read…Broward Ethics ….The Sword and The Shield

Excerpt….

‘Doesn’t anyone realize that we already have a panel of regular, ordinary citizens with the duty to watch over ALL Broward elected and non-elected officials, not just county commissioners?

And the existing panel isn’t a toothless lion. It has the power to issue subpoenas, jail those who refuse to testify and force public officials, such as mayors, city clerks, supervisor of election and county commissioners, to face criminal charges that could result in prison time. If only the panel members knew it.

I’m talking about the grand jury, a panel of 18 21 Broward residents selected at random every six months from those called for regular jury duty. The latest term began on March 10.’

DIGGIN’ THE DISCLOSURES….

April 8, 2009 by Barbara

BC- THIS IS HOW WE DO IT,DO IT,DO IT…..

Excerpts…

‘We’ve flipped through the disclosures of 179 officials [1], ranging from the White House social secretary to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and the documents are rich with interesting details. Help us parse the disclosures and post your discoveries in the comments section below.

Here’s an example of what we’ve found so far: On paper, Susan Rice looks like she belongs at the Treasury [4], rather than the State Department. The new United Nations ambassador’s disclosure [4] lists 10 individual stock holdings, largely in Canadian companies, that total at least $4.25 million.

The disclosures are a matter of public record. But the government insists on giving them out by request only. We’re cutting out the middleman: Dig into the documents yourself [1].’
