Did They Get A Grant For This?….

April 29, 2009 by Barbara

BC- To whack or not to whack…that is the question….

‘Leapin’ lizards. Literally.

There was information ranging from what plants are most vulnerable to an iguana palate to how to harass and euthanize them if they become a nuisance.

Some options? A “Super Soaker” filled with ice water, a tether ball attached to a rope and the “ever popular broom or mop.” While euthanasia is an option for some, there are strict guidelines governing the method, Bill Kern Jr., a University of Florida associate professor of entomology and nematology, told the crowd.

“Whack them in the head, stun them and then decapitate them,” he said. “Whack them in the head more than once and it’s animal cruelty.”

Twisting In The Wind….

April 28, 2009 by Barbara

BC- Sounds an awful like hurricane predictions…not quite sure where it will make landfall….

Excerpts….

‘For all that scientists have learned about influenza since the catastrophic pandemic of 1917-19, one thing has not changed: the predictably unpredictable nature of the viruses that cause it.

The Takeaway With Andrew C. Revkin
A Cause for Panic?

The W.H.O. and public-health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention find themselves in a delicate balance, obliged to provide information about potentially lethal diseases without causing panic.

Although health officials have held exercises to prepare for pandemics and outbreaks caused by bioterrorism, they have yet to master the necessary communications skills. They are in a “damned if they do, damned if they don’t” situation.’

And All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt…

April 27, 2009 by Barbara

BC- Place your bets…

Excerpt…
‘Ready, Get Set, Go!

Eleven leatherback sea turtles are taking part in the Great Turtle Race, speeding from foraging grounds in the frigid waters of Canada to nesting beaches on the sun-soaked shores of the Caribbean. The turtles are tagged with state-of-the-art satellite tracking devices that allow us to follow their incredible 3,700-mile (6,000-kilometer) journey.

The data collected from the turtles during the migration will help scientists in their own race to save this endangered species from threats such as coastal development, fishery bycatch, and egg harvesting.

Which turtle will reach the finish line first? Which will dive the deepest or go the farthest afield? Will they all make it to the end? Follow the turtles as they race across the Atlantic!’

So Where’s The White Horse?….

April 25, 2009 by Barbara

BC- Buddy Nevin’s got the scoop…….but what happened to his white horse?…

Excerpts…

‘Jenne talked exclusively with Browardbeat.com about life in behind bars, what he is doing now and the future.

He seemed to want to talk about his year in federal prison for corruption.  He says it was no picnic.

The experience humbled him.  Made him appreciate life more.

He’s moving on.

Although he lost his ticket, his license to practice law, he got a good job.

Scott Rothstein, the downtown Fort Lauderdale lawyer, took him in.

Jenne called Rothstein generous.  The former sheriff says he was getting “a fair” salary, but not an extravagant one.  I hear the low six figures.’

Drowning In Pompano Beach…

April 25, 2009 by Barbara

‘RESCUER DIES SAVING CHILDREN FROM OCEAN TIDES

BSO Case Number: PB09-04-7826
PIO Number: 09-4-39
Date: 4/25/09
Time: 12:58 p.m. Jurisdiction: Pompano Beach
Place of Occurrence: 1200 block of South Ocean Boulevard, Pompano Beach

Description of Incident:

A Washington D.C. man walking on the beach with his girlfriend didn’t hesitate to help when he noticed two boys struggling in the ocean water. Charles Schulze went into the Atlantic and helped both boys, ages 9 and 12, get safely back to their thankful mother.

About 100 yards from shore, Schulze ran into his own trouble. He didn’t immediately swim back once the boys were safe, witnesses told Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives. He never made it back to the beach. His girlfriend, Helen Smith of Washington D.C., started yelling for help and two bystanders went into the water to pull him out. Schulze was pronounced dead at Holy Cross Hospital at 1:28 p.m.

It’s unclear exactly whether Schulze had a medical problem in the water, became exhausted during the rescue or if he got caught in a powerful rip current. Detectives are continuing to investigate. The boyfriend and girlfriend own a condominium in the area and are regular visitors to South Florida’

Gotta Be Green ….To Get The Green…In Business….Earth Day “Green”…

April 22, 2009 by Barbara

BC- Green and Grouchy…but Politically Correct…

Excerpts…

The lengths to which some go to connect their wares to the event made us chuckle: “Free solar LED Christmas lights for Earth Day!” “Chair massage is the perfect renewable energy source.”

‘As we waded through all the Earth Day clutter and spoke to a number of businesses of varying size and sector, we noticed the initiatives, campaigns and announcements fell into three broad but basic buckets.

Clearly, what started as an environmental protest nearly 40 years ago has grown into a blitzkrieg of an occasion that businesses use externally as a platform, marketing opportunity and engagement tool to define and accentuate their green credentials. (See our companion article, “How Companies Celebrate Earth Day” to get the scoop on how companies are celebrating Earth Day internally.)

It’s Not Your Grandfather’s Auction….

April 21, 2009 by Barbara

BC- ALL THAT’S MISSING IS THE PADDLES…

Excerpts…

‘In the old days, if you didn’t pay your property taxes, your home was sold on the courthouse steps. Fast forward to 2009. If you didn’t pay your taxes this year, the auction will take place in cyberspace.

This year’s sale will occur only online, May 26-27 at https://www.bidbroward.com/. The county announced the move late Monday and encouraged bidders to go online early to register, submit a deposit and establish a spending budget. Bidders can review the list of unpaid real property taxes and submit bids beginning May 5.

Broward County has approximately $325 million in unpaid property taxes’

Don’t Weigh Me Down….

April 21, 2009 by Barbara

BC- Maybe earth will be flat after all!…Start walking people…start walking…save the earth…and the polar bears…(polar bears can swim….)

Excerpts…

‘The scientists say providing extra grub for them to guzzle adds to carbon emissions that heat up the world, melting polar ice caps, raising sea levels and killing rain forests.

The environmental impact of fat humans is made even worse because they are more likely to travel by car — another major cause of carbon emissions.’

Maybe It Was The Goat?….

April 18, 2009 by Barbara

BC- I’m with John…A Chicago connection…waiting for the Cubs to win the world series…and waiting for Global warming …pretty much the same thing….

Maybe it was the goat?...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_the_Billy_Goat

Excerpts…

‘But in some circles, Coleman is known for challenging the idea of global warming, calling it “the greatest scam in history.”

“It is a hoax. It is bad science. It is hijacking public policy,” says Coleman, now a forecaster in San Diego.

At a recent congressional subcommittee hearing on the “Impacts of Climate Change on America’s National Parks” held at Twentynine Palms, Calif., near Joshua Tree, Coleman testified that “these scientists know that if they do research and the results are in no way alarming, their research will gather dust on the shelf and their research careers will languish.”

Coleman says the global warming movement was sparked by scientist Roger Revelle, who was seeking increased funding for the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.’
