Public Notices….Made Less Public?…….

TAKING AWAY THE HARD COPY?…..

‘Notices about upcoming planning decisions, proposed tax expenditures, bidding deadlines, zoning changes — all these notices would disappear from the pages of local newspapers and appear on government Web sites if the Legislature approves HB 1477 and SB 2292, two problematic bills sponsored by state Rep. Juan Zapata, R-Miami, and state Sen. Rhonda Storms, R-Brandon.
The good news is that the legislation seems stalled in a maze of committees in both legislative chambers. Saving money may have been the impetus behind the legislation, but given the more practical alternatives for addressing the state’s budget problems, a slow death on a committee docket would be a fitting fate for this short-sighted measure.
Allowing government agencies to post their own notices on their own Web sites carries a big potential for abuse, a risk that should concern any legislator who worries about government encroachment. Florida newspapers currently provide government officials a third-party buffer that would be lost if the state changes the way public notices are handled.’
BC- There seems to be many ways to save money…but this one…should stay mired in muck…it’s should be taken off the table…
